What is central serous retinopathy?
In CSR, fluid builds up under the retina at the back of the eye, usually linked to changes in the layer of blood vessels beneath it. It's also known as central serous chorioretinopathy. It most often affects people aged about 30 to 50, and it's more common in men.
Symptoms
- Blurred central vision, usually without pain
- Straight lines or shapes looking distorted
- A blind spot in your central vision
Causes and risk factors
The cause isn't fully understood. Steroid medicines are a well-recognised risk factor, including tablets, creams and inhalers, so please tell Mrs Mann about all the medicines you use. Don't stop a prescribed steroid without medical advice. Stress is often linked with CSR as well, although the evidence is less clear.
Treatment
Most cases settle on their own within a few months, so careful monitoring is often the first step. If the fluid doesn't clear, or CSR keeps coming back, treatment options such as laser or light-based therapy may be considered. Not everyone benefits from treatment, and Mrs Mann can talk through what's right for you.
Your consultation
Mrs Mann sees private patients at The London Medical Clinic in Marylebone, central London. A first consultation usually includes a discussion of your symptoms and medical history, a vision check, drops to widen your pupils, and an examination of the back of your eye. You may also have a retinal scan. The drops can blur your vision for a few hours, so please don't plan to drive afterwards.
Common questions
Will central serous retinopathy go away?
Most cases settle on their own within a few months, although a small number come back or become long-lasting.
Can stress cause CSR?
Stress is commonly linked with CSR, but it isn't clear how much it contributes. Steroid medicines are a better-established risk factor.
Can CSR affect both eyes?
It usually affects one eye at a time, but it can affect both.
